Bet Type GuideTotals (Over/Under) Betting Explained
A totals bet, also called over/under, is a wager on the combined score of both teams in a game. You don\'t care who wins; you only care whether the total points scored land above or below the posted number. This guide explains how totals work, what moves them, and when to take the over vs the under.
How totals work
The sportsbook posts a combined score projection. You bet "over" if you expect more points than the projection or "under" if you expect fewer. Standard totals juice is -110, the same as point spreads.
Example: Commanders vs Cowboys total of 47.5
If the final score is 27-21 (combined 48), the OVER wins because the combined score (48) is greater than 47.5. If the final is 17-13 (combined 30), the UNDER wins because the combined score (30) is less than 47.5. If the total were 47 (a whole number) and the final score was 27-20 (combined 47 exactly), the bet would push and your stake would be refunded.
Sport-by-sport total ranges
- NFL: totals range from 35.5 (defensive battle, bad weather) to 55.5 (high-pace offenses, dome).
- NBA: 215.5 to 235.5 in the modern game. Pace and three-point variance are the biggest drivers.
- MLB: 7.5 to 9.5 runs. Pitching, weather, and ballpark dimensions all matter.
- NHL: 5.5 or 6.5 goals. Empty-net goals at the end of close games frequently push totals over.
- Soccer: 2.5 or 3 goals in most leagues. Premier League slightly higher than La Liga.
- College football: 38.5 to 75.5 depending on tempo and matchup.
What moves totals
Totals are more sensitive to specific information than spreads:
- Weather (outdoor sports): wind above 15 mph and heavy precipitation drop NFL totals 3-5 points. MLB wind direction at Nationals Park can swing totals by full runs.
- Starting pitchers (MLB): a confirmed scratch of an ace can move a total 1.5 runs.
- Starting goalie (NHL): a backup starting in place of an All-Star goalie shifts totals by 0.5-1 goal.
- Pace (NBA): two fast-pace teams playing each other inflate totals; back-to-back fatigue drops them.
- Inactive lists (NBA, NFL): star availability changes team scoring expectations.
Quarter totals and half totals
Most sports also offer totals for partial-game periods:
- First half / second half totals (NFL, NBA, NCAAF, NCAAB): useful for isolating early vs late game scoring environments.
- Quarter totals (NFL, NBA): tighter ranges than full-game totals.
- First 5 Innings totals (MLB): isolates the starting pitchers from bullpen variance.
- Period totals (NHL): 1st period totals run lower than later periods.
Team totals
A team total bets on one team\'s individual score, rather than the combined score. Commanders team total over 23.5 means the Commanders alone must score 24 or more. Team totals are useful when you have a strong read on one offense but no opinion on the other.

Frequently asked questions
What does over/under mean in betting?
Over/under (also called "totals") is a bet on the combined score of both teams. The sportsbook posts a projected combined number (e.g., 47.5 in an NFL game). You bet "over" if you think the actual final combined score will exceed it, or "under" if you think it will fall short.
What is a push on a total?
A push happens when the combined score lands exactly on the total (e.g., total is 45 and the final score is 24-21 = 45). The bet is voided and stake refunded. Half-point totals (47.5, 215.5) cannot push.
How do overtime points count toward totals?
Overtime counts toward the total in most US sports. NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB all include OT/extra innings/shootout in the final total. Soccer totals typically exclude extra time and settle only on the result at the end of regulation.
What factors move totals the most?
Weather (wind and precipitation in outdoor sports), starting pitcher (MLB), starting goalie (NHL), pace of play and rest (NBA back-to-backs), and quarterback availability (NFL). Sharp money on a posted total moves the line proactively before public bettors can pile on.
Should I bet totals or sides for value?
Totals tend to be slightly softer markets than sides (point spreads) because handle is more concentrated on sides. Professional bettors often look for totals value first. That said, sportsbooks have closed most of the gap in recent years and both markets are now roughly equally efficient on major sports.
