Bet Type GuideFutures Betting Explained
A futures bet is a long-term wager on an outcome that won\'t resolve for weeks or months: Super Bowl winner, World Series winner, NBA MVP, season win totals. This guide explains how futures work, when prices offer the most value, and how to think about cash out on futures.
How futures work
Futures are bets placed before or during a season on long-term outcomes. The price you lock in is the price at the moment of bet placement; subsequent movement doesn\'t change your payout. Your stake is locked up until the outcome resolves (which can be 8-9 months for a pre-season Super Bowl bet).
Example: Commanders Super Bowl futures
If the Commanders win Super Bowl LXI in February 2027, this $50 bet pays $1,800 total. If they don\'t win, the bet loses. Note that the +3500 price you locked in May can move dramatically over the season; if the Commanders open 4-0, that price might fall to +1500 by October, but your bet remains priced at +3500. This is what makes early futures betting valuable when you identify undervalued teams.
Common futures markets
- Championship winners: Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Championship, Stanley Cup, MLS Cup, FIFA World Cup.
- Conference winners: AFC/NFC, AL/NL, Eastern/Western conference (NBA, NHL), MLS conferences.
- Division winners: NFC East, NL East, etc.
- Regular season win totals: e.g., Commanders 9.5 wins, Wizards 27.5 wins.
- Individual awards: MVP, Cy Young, ROY, Most Improved, Sixth Man, Hart, Vezina, Heisman, Golden Boot.
- Player propositions: Ovechkin season goals total, Daniels passing yards total.
- Special: first team eliminated, missing the playoffs, longest losing streak.
When futures prices move most
Futures prices shift on news events:
- Post-championship reset: the day after each championship, the sportsbook reposts futures for the new season at initial prices. These early prices are often the best value of the year for sharp futures bettors.
- Free agency / offseason moves: star player signings or trades reshape championship odds.
- Draft and roster cuts: NFL pre-season, NBA training camp.
- Opening day: regular-season win totals move sharply.
- Trade deadlines: mid-season roster shifts reshape championship and win-total markets.
- Playoffs: championship futures swing dramatically as teams are eliminated.
Futures cash out
Most DC sportsbooks support cash out on futures. The cash out value moves with the underlying probability: a pre-season $50 bet at +3500 might offer a $200 cash out value if the team reaches the conference championship round. Cash out lets you lock in profit before the final result, at a slight premium to the sportsbook.
Where to bet futures in DC
All six DC sportsbooks offer full futures coverage. FanDuel and DraftKings typically post initial post-championship futures earliest. BetMGM often runs futures-specific promos (price boosts on long-shot championship plays) during the offseason. Caesars, Fanatics, and theScore Bet round out the market.
Frequently asked questions
What is a futures bet?
A futures bet is a long-term wager on an outcome that won't be decided for weeks or months. Common examples: Super Bowl winner placed before the NFL season, NBA MVP placed mid-season, World Series winner placed at any point. Futures lock up your stake until the event resolves.
When do futures odds offer the most value?
Two specific moments: (1) immediately after the previous championship ends, when oddsmakers post initial prices that haven't yet been moved by sharp money, and (2) right before the trade deadline or roster moves, when prices haven't fully baked in the implications. Sharp futures bettors often look for stale prices that haven't adjusted to recent injury news.
Can I cash out a futures bet early?
Most DC sportsbooks support cash out on futures, especially during the playoffs as the field narrows. A pre-season Wizards championship futures bet at +50000 isn't typically cashable mid-regular-season because the price won't have moved meaningfully. But a Capitals Stanley Cup futures bet placed at +1200 in September becomes very cashable if the Caps reach the conference finals at +400.
Are futures payouts taxed?
Yes. Any winnings from sports betting (including futures) are subject to federal income tax and DC income tax. Sportsbooks issue a 1099-K or W-2G for winnings over the IRS reporting threshold ($600 for fantasy and some other contexts, $1,200 for slot machines, etc.). For sports betting specifically, you're responsible for reporting all winnings on your tax return.
Why do futures prices change after my bet is placed?
Prices float based on market action and news. Your bet locks in the price at the moment you placed it; subsequent price movement doesn't change your payout. If you bet Commanders +3500 to win the Super Bowl in May and they later move to +1500 after a strong start, your bet pays at +3500 regardless. This is a major advantage of futures betting if you can identify undervalued teams early.
